Pipe Sizes and Pipe Schedule - A Complete Guide For Piping Professional

April 10, Pressure Vessel Technol. August ; 4 : In the engineering practice, it is often necessary to define supporting scheme and expansion loop requirements for piping distribution systems in very early phases of a project. While placing pipe supports is a relatively easy and straightforward task, providing accurate loop locations and dimensions for hot piping systems can often be challenging.

In the early phases of any project, it is impractical, costly and time consuming to perform detailed stress analysis of a piping system to provide expansion loop dimensions, and therefore approximate methods are often 38 super match 1911. Comprehensive overview of these existing procedures most commonly used in the engineering practice is given in this article.

However, the fact is that most of the existing methods are based on the inconvenient charts and tables with scarce background data.

Procedure proposed in this article is based on over expansion loop models and provides a simple and accurate analytical method to size and verify piping loops. Two fully worked examples show the simplicity and accuracy of the proposed model and its advantages over the methods typically used in the engineering practice.

The following codes are used for the design, construction and inspection of piping systems in North America. Piping codes developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers:. Piping typically found in electric power generating stations, in industrial and institutional plants, geothermal heating systems and central and district heating and cooling plants.

Piping typically found in petroleum refineries, chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, per, semiconductor and cryogenic plants and related processing plants and terminals. Piping transporting products which are predominately quid between plants and terminals and within terminals, pumping, regulating, and metering stations. Piping for refrigerants and secondary coolants. Piping transporting products which are predominately gas between sources and terminals including compressor, regulating and metering stations, gas gathering pipelines.

Piping typically found in industrial, institutional, commercial and public buildings and in multi-unit residences which does not require the range of sizes, pressures and temperatures covered in B Piping transporting aqueous slurries between plants and terminals within terminals, pumping and regulating stations. The following codes are used to specify the geometric, material and strength of piping and components:.

NEPA Codes. National Electrical Protection Association. Piping covering fire protection systems using water, carbon dioxide, halon, foam, dry chemical and wet chemicals. Piping for medical and laboratory gas systems. CSA Standards. Canadian Standards Association. This standard supercedes these standards:. B 51 Boilers and Pressure Vessels. B 53 Identification of Piping Systems. B 52 Mechanical Refrigeration Code. B 63 Welded and Seamless Steel Pipes. B Z The MSS standards are directed at general industrial applications.

The pipeline industry makes extensive use of these piping component and quality acceptance standards. SP Steel Pipeline Flanges. American Petroleum Institute.

The API standards are focused on oil production, refinery and product distribution services. Equipment specified to these standards are typically more robust than general industrial applications.

There are numerous American Society for Testing and Materials designations cover the specification of wrought materials, forgings and castings used for plate, fittings, pipe and valves. The ASTM standards are directed to dimensional standards, materials and strength considerations.Together, they remain essential references for anyone engaged with piping. Color marking will make identification easier for raw material and fluid that being transport by the pipe. During construction and fabrication, various grades of carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel are used. To avoid mixing of this material and easy storing and retrieving in the warehouse, piping components such as pipe, fittings, flanges, and valves are color coded.

All most all company has their own color coding system. It also provides guidance on marking location on piping components. Refer below images for the color band location on piping components. Oil and Gas Industries, Process industries are complex installation.

Piping systems are used in these plants to transport various fluids. These pipelines transport various industrial materials such as gases such as Air, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Hydrogen etc.

Without proper pipe color code, it is extremely difficult to identify the material pipeline transporting. To reduces the safety hazard, reduce the possibility of mistakes in identification and accidents associated with wrong identification of pipeline during the emergency situation, systematic color coding of pipeline and piping system is essential.

Uniformity of color marking promotes greater safety, lessens the chances of error and reduces hazards involved in the handling of material inside the pipelines. There are national and international standard that provides the guidelines for uniform color coding in industries that are used to color code of pipe to identify.

These standard uses different color code methodology to identify the pipe material. They use a base color, band color, letters and direction arrow to identify fluid inside the pipeline. ASME A In this standard, following category are used.

BS use two types of colour coding to identify the content of pipe and hazard. Other than colour code, additional information regarding the nature of the contents of the pipe by using the following systems either individually or in combination:.

IS is Indian Standard for the colour coding requirements.Satish Lele lelepiping gmail. Standardization reduces cost, confusion and inconvenience.

ASME B31.1 (2007): Code for Pressure Piping, Power Piping

Code is also accepted by Governments. The main objective is to have Standardization and Safety.

CODE : A group of general rules or systematic procedures for Design, Fabrication, Installation and Inspection methods prepared in such a manner that Code can be adopted by legal jurisdiction and made into a law.

Companies also develop Guides in order to have consistency in the documentation. These cover various engineering methods which are considered good practices, without specific recommendations or requirements.

Codes and Standards, besides being regulations, might also be considered as Design Aids since they provide guidance from experts. Each country has its own Codes and Standards. On global basis, American National Standards are the most widely used and compliance with those requirements are accepted world over.

When specific model of manufacture of the element is not to be specified, then the material can be identified by ANSI Standards. This code prescribes minimum requirements for the design, materials, fabrication, erection, test, and inspection of power and auxiliary service piping systems for electric generation stations, industrial institutional plants, central and district heating plants.

The code covers boiler external piping for power boilers and high temperature, high pressure water boilers in which steam or vapor is generated at a pressure of more than 15 pounds per square inch PSIG or 1 Kg per square centimeters, and high temperature water is generated at pressures exceeding pounds per square inch PSIG or This Code contains rules for piping typically found in petroleum refineries; chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, paper, semiconductor, and cryogenic plants; and related processing plants and terminals.
